Le custodie medicali EVA possono essere sterilizzate senza danni?

A nurse manager in Osaka asked us a direct question last month: can the case go into the autoclave with the instruments? The short answer from our material bench was no, and the longer answer took a full page. EVA is a thermoplastic that starts to soften in the 70-80 C range, and a steam autoclave cycle runs at 121 C or 134 C under pressure. A case that survives one cycle comes out warped at the corners with the laminate lifting off the shell. That does not mean the case cannot be disinfected, it means the disinfection method has to be chosen for the material.

What wipes and sprays EVA tolerates

For day-to-day infection control, 70 percent isopropyl alcohol and quaternary ammonium wipes are the safe default. We run a 1,000-cycle wipe test on production laminate using 70 percent IPA, then check for surface crazing, colour transfer and seam lift; a passing result is no visible change after 1,000 double wipes. Dilute sodium hypochlorite at 1,000 ppm is also acceptable on the shell, though repeated use will fade dyed fabric trims, so we recommend a clear rinse wipe afterwards. Hydrogen peroxide at 0.5 percent and peracetic acid based surface disinfectants are fine on the EVA surface and on PU leather laminates. Colour fastness to rubbing is checked to ISO 105-X12 and AATCC 8, and we hold to grade 4 or better on the lining.

What to keep away from the shell

Solvents are the real hazard. Acetone, toluene, MEK and paint thinner attack the EVA surface within seconds and leave a permanent dull patch, and they dissolve the adhesive used to bond the fabric laminate. Autoclaving, boiling and dry-heat cabinets above 80 C are out. UV-C cabinets are a grey area: a short cycle will not visibly change the shell, but cumulative exposure yellows EVA and accelerates surface chalking, so we steer hospital buyers toward chemical wipe-down for the case and reserve UV-C for the instruments. Abrasive scouring pads and stiff brushes score the grain and give dirt somewhere to sit.

How we build the case so it can be cleaned

Cleanability is a design decision made before tooling. On medical builds we shorten the stitch line, move the seam off the wipe path, and use a welded or ultrasonically bonded edge on high-touch areas instead of exposed thread. The lining is a wipe-clean 210D or TPU-coated fabric rather than untreated velvet where the customer expects frequent disinfection, and the zipper is a reverse coil under a storm flap so there is no exposed tape to trap fluid. Our EVA medical cases are built on this pattern, and the interior can be specified as a sealed tray that lifts out for separate cleaning.

Foam inserts get replaced, not sterilized. A die-cut insert that has been soaked is a contamination risk regardless of what it was soaked in, so we supply spares at roughly 3-5 percent of shell cost and clinics swap them on a schedule. Insulated carriers with gel packs follow the same rule: wipe the liner, freeze the packs separately, never submerge the shell. The full set of laminate and lining options sits on the customization page.

Material files for these builds are held under ISO 9001 control at the Gaobu plant, with RoHS and REACH declarations and CTI reports issued per production batch. Buyers planning a complete sterile barrier system should look at ISO 11607 for that layer, because the case is a transport and storage container, not the barrier itself. If you need a surface finish that survives a specific hospital disinfectant, send the product name to the engineering team and we will run the wipe test on it before quoting.

Can an EVA medical case be autoclaved?
No. EVA begins to soften around 70 to 80 C, while a steam autoclave cycle runs at 121 C or 134 C under pressure. A case that goes through one cycle usually comes out warped with the laminate lifting. Use chemical disinfection instead: 70 percent isopropyl alcohol and quaternary ammonium wipes are both safe on the shell surface.
Which disinfectants are safe on EVA case surfaces?
Seventy percent isopropyl alcohol, quaternary ammonium wipes, 0.5 percent hydrogen peroxide and dilute sodium hypochlorite at 1,000 ppm are all acceptable on EVA and PU leather laminates. We test production laminate to 1,000 double wipes and check for crazing and colour transfer to ISO 105-X12, holding to grade 4 or better.
Can the foam insert be replaced after it gets contaminated?
Yes, and it should be. A soaked die-cut insert is a contamination risk regardless of the disinfectant used. Inserts are supplied as spares at roughly 3 to 5 percent of shell cost, so a clinic can swap them on a schedule. The shell itself is wiped down and never submerged.
