A buyer from Osaka sent us a photograph in March: a child's backpack that had collapsed into itself after one school term, the front panel creased permanently where it had been stuffed into a locker. Her question was whether a molded EVA shell would hold up better than the fabric version. We built both and sent them back, and the difference showed up in the first week - not in the shell, but in how the load distributed across the shoulder straps.
What the Term Actually Means
An EVA backpack case is a backpack whose front or outer shell is a molded ethylene-vinyl acetate panel rather than a sewn fabric panel. The shell is formed by compression molding, so it keeps a three-dimensional shape when empty, and it carries printed or embossed artwork without a separate laminate. The back panel, straps and harness are still textile: typically 600D Oxford over foam, with a breathable mesh facing. That hybrid is the whole point - a rigid front for protection, a soft back for comfort.
Two build types dominate. A full-shell version molds the entire front, giving the best crush resistance but adding weight; a half-shell version molds a panel that is then sewn into a fabric body, which keeps children's sizes closer to 400-600 g. Wall thickness runs 1.5-2.5 mm and shell density sits around 0.18-0.22 g/cm3.
Where the Load Goes
Strap attachment is the part that fails first. On our pull rig, a webbing loop sewn into fabric alone starts to deform around 15-20 kg; anchoring the same loop through the molded shell moves the failure point up and, more usefully, moves it to the stitching where it can be seen and repaired. We specify a bar-tack at every strap root and run a 20 kg static pull for 30 seconds on each production sample.
For children's models the material question is different. EN 71 covers mechanical safety and certain chemical limits for toys and children's products, and any molded part a child can mouth has to be checked against it. We keep pigment and adhesive selections for kids' packs on a restricted list and ask for the age grading before quoting, because a pack sold as a toy accessory is tested under different rules than one sold as school stationery.
Zippers are the other wear item. A coil zipper on a school pack sees far more cycles than one on a storage case - a child opens it several times a day - so we test to 5,000 cycles as a floor and specify a metal or heavy-duty synthetic slider on the main compartment.
Our EVA backpack case range covers school sizes, camera inserts and laptop day packs. Buyers who need a rigid interior cut for a specific device usually start from the tablet case line instead, because the foam there is cut for the device rather than for books.
The Osaka samples came back with a note attached: the fabric version had been adopted for the lightweight SKU and the molded one for the premium SKU, and both needed the strap root moved 8 mm higher.
